Conference Highlights

The 2012 MAPE-PREPS Conference is loaded with keynote and concurrent sessions focusing on Common Core and related initiatives, including the new teacher evaluation for Mississippi. Also, MAPE will lead helpful workshops on understanding the value of partnerships. PREPS ValueAdded Awards and MAPE Governor’s Awards recognizing outstanding school-community partnerships will be presented on March 21.

Dr. Tom Burnham, State Superintendent of Education, will be keynote speaker at the opening General Session on March 20. Dr. Burnham is a member of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) Governing Board, which makes major policy and operational decisions on behalf of PARCC.

Concurrent session topics include, but are not limited to:
  • Mississippi’s New Teacher Evaluation
  • Strategies to Support Common Core Implementation in Literacy (presented in grade spans: K-2, 3-5, & 6-8)
  • Strategies to Support Common Core Implementation in Mathematics (presented in grade spans K-2, 3-5, & 6-8)
  • Assisting Students in Grades 6-8 Who are “Falling Through the Cracks” in Mathematics
  • Helping High School Teachers Realize their Role in Teaching Literacy Skills (as required by CCSS)
  • Informing Parents and the Community about Common Core State Standards: Implementation Issues, International Benchmarking, and Forming Partnerships to Support Students
  • Standards Based Assessment and Use of Formative vs. Summative Assessments
  • ELL & Multicultural Issues: How to Differentiate for Diverse Populations
  • Accountability Issues During the Transition to Common Core Standards
  • Students Must Write MORE! Impact of the CCSS on Writing Assessment (Same Modes, More Emphasis on Thinking and Inclusion of Research Skills)
  • Ways for Special Educators to Integrate Common Core Standards into Instruction
  • Preparing for the Biology I Assessment
  • How Partnerships can support the Implementation of the Common Core Standards
